Free speech can indeed be offensive
Reading Sundays E-R, I was sorry to read that comedian Bill Murray told a joke that was considered old and lame … causing a lady to be offended … possibly suing. Once, you actually have to do harm with your speech to be liable. Maybe telling a lie about a particular person … defaming another’s worth.
Today, it seems, anything that offends can be attacked. Hard to imagine Bill Murray not telling old lame jokes. I don’t think our Constitution was ever designed to protect against someone else’s sensibilities … of just being offended.
Too bad George Carlin has died. He was the master of offensive speech that didn’t cause any particular person harm … harming only their sensibilities. Carlin would have done a very entertaining 30-minute monologue on this sad tale
PS: I bought Anthony Watt’s book that was also noted in Sunday’s paper
