Students display works at Butte College exhibit
BUTTE VALLEY » Butte College is holding its Butte Gallery Student Art exhibit on the first floor of the Arts building on campus between May 2 and May 19.
The jurored exhibit, which features mostly paintings and some photographs, as well as some sculptures made of different materials such as fibers, is a collection of Butte College art students’ work.
Maggie Pope-Pangelina, who also works in the gallery, has two paintings featured in the exhibit. One is called “La Cucaracha” and features a black cockroach. The other is a color painting of a centipede. Pope-Pangelina cares a lot about politics and the centipede ended up depicting the blue and gold colors of Ukraine, with the red head of the insect depicting Russia.
“I like the way bugs look,” Pope-Pangelina said when asked what her inspiration was. She started drawing and the paintings turned into bugs and she “just went with it.” PopePangelina is a second-semester Butte College student and plans to major in studio art. She said she was very artistic as a child and is fascinated by all forms of art. She graduated from Inspire High School.
Some of the pieces won prizes. The students were given five prompts regarding subjects for the art pieces.
Ryan Davidson, a music teacher at Butte College, visited the gallery Tuesday.
“I always pop in,” he said. “I get inspired looking at artist’s work. I love visual arts and like to see what the department is doing.”
Davidson liked “The Pompeii Pony,” a vessel shaped like a pony that was Raku fired. The piece was made by David Owens.
“I love the gallery and love that we have it on campus,” he said. “I love to walk by it every day.”
A painting of a bunny won Best of Category, with the student winning $50.
The gallery is open Monday from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
