OROVILLE » The Oroville YMCA is gearing up for summer.

“There’s lots to do at YMCA this summer. We hope people come out and check out all the activities for all ages,” said Sarah Pierce, program director.

The Oroville YMCA was founded 1914 and has been at its Robinson Street location since the early 1920s. The facility features a pool where water aerobics classes, open swim and both group and private swim lessons are held. Monthly CPR classes are also offered at this facility.

In 2021 the Y expanded into the Oroville Convention Center on Myers Street which is where the nonprofit’s fitness center, gym and basketball court is located. Group fitness classes are also held at this facility and include Pilates, yoga and senior balance classes, but Pierce said they are hoping to increase the offerings soon.

The Summer Youth CoEd Basketball League for children age 4 through seventh grade will also take place at the convention center starting at the end of June. Practice takes place one night a week and games will be on Saturdays. Signups are now open.

“We realize the need for youth basketball in the Oroville area and we are happy to fill that need now that we are in the convention center,” said Pierce.

Open basketball will also continue through the summer from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the convention center.

The convention center will also be home to a new program called In Studio. This virtual fitness option will provide interactive, ondemand classes including Zumba, yoga and aerobics among others.

“This new digital program gives members the ability to take classes when they want to take them, at a time that works for them in our mind and body studio upstairs. It’s like taking a class at home except we have all the equipment here to make them successful in the class,” said Pierce.

The Y’s Summer Day Camp for kids ages 5 through seventh grade starts June 6 and runs through Aug. 12. The day camp will operate from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost is $225 a week and meals and snacks are included. Scholarships are available.

“There will be swimming every day and each week there will be a different, fun theme that activities are based on. We’ll have art, garden theater and sports clubs. We’ll also be going to the (Thermalito) Forebay and Riverbend Park,” said Pierce.

Bear Valley Resident Camp will run June 26 through Aug. 5 with both three-day and six-day camp experiences available. The cost ranges from $400 to $650. Scholarships are available.

“There’ll be archery, swimming, camp fires and lots of fun,” said Pierce.

The Oroville Y is solely funded through private donations, fundraisers and membership fees that range from $35 to $70 a month.

The nonprofit also offers the Y-Assist program to financially help out those who want to participate in programs and activities but may not have means to pay full membership or program fees.

“At the Oroville YMCA we believe everyone regardless of age, income or background should have opportunity to reach their fullest potential because we believe that opportunity shouldn’t be a privilege,” said Pierce.
