Great suggestions for better bus service

-

Martha Claudio’s suggestion for better bus service is on target for reducing our reliance on cars (Editor For A Day,

May 4). As an avid public transit customer, I can tell you that some businesses will not even consider hiring you if you take the bus. Why? In areas where bus service is only once an hour, some less-than-reliable employees use this as an excuse to come in late to work. If the bus runs more often, these excuses will go away.

Getting the public to transition to public transportation is something of a chicken or the egg conundrum, as in, which comes first. Some people swear that if we build it, they will come. And I believe that’s part of it. But Martha’s suggestion points out that we need to address the frequency of the service to lure people out of their cars. Using smaller buses while we make this transition is just smart. It may turn out to be all we need.

Thank you, Martha Claudio, for bringing this to our attention.
