Vandal defaces faculty member’s door

President seeks help in finding culprit

CHICO >> A Chico State faculty member’s Butte Hall office was the target of racist vandalism Thursday, marking the second time it happened in the span of a week.

The University Police Department would not address the issue when asked, instead referring this newspaper to the University Communications Department,

which forwarded a message from President Gayle Hutchinson on the matter.

The name of the targeted faculty member was not made available. Apparently, the faculty member’s office door featured stickers and posters with the “You Belong Here, Racism Doesn’t” slogan which the university’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion had produced. The vandal had defaced the stickers and posters in the same manner as had been done Feb. 16.

It is not clear whether the same person committed both acts.

There had apparently also been a misogynistic disruption of an online class session last week, though details were not available for that incident either.

“These deplorable acts are an attack on not only the individual who was targeted, but also our community, our mission, and our shared values,” Hutchinson said in the printed remarks. “They do not reflect the inclusive learning communities we aim to foster — and we condemn them.

“The university is currently investigating both acts as well as a racist and misogynistic disruption to an online class that occurred last week. If you have any information about who may have committed these acts or see anything else that is of concern, please submit an anonymous tip,” she added.

Anyone wishing to submit a tip should contact University Police at 530898-5555 for information on how to do this.
