Gurriel agrees to $42 million, 3-year deal, AP source says

-

PHOENIX The Arizona Diamondbacks are keeping outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on a $42 million, three-year contract that includes a club option for 2027, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday because the deal hasn't been officially announced.

Gurriel came to the D'backs in a trade with the Blue Jays last offseason and was a mainstay in the lineup during their unexpected run to the World Series.

He made his first All-Star team while batting .261 with 24 homers and 82 RBIs. The righthanded batter played solid defense in left field and was popular with fans — in no small part because of his hair, which he dyed bright purple.

TEXAS TECH BEATS CAL >> Behren Morton completed 27 of 43 passes for 256 yards and three first-half touchdowns, leading Texas Tech to a 34-14 victory over California in the Independence Bowl on Saturday night.

Tahj Brooks ran for 98 yards and a score as the Red Raiders (7-6) shook off a terrible start. They shut out the Golden Bears (6-7) for the final three quarters to win the 47th edition of college football's 11th-oldest bowl game.

Texas Tech led 24-14 at halftime and Brooks, the nation's fourth-leading rusher, scored the only touchdown of the second half on a 7-yard run in the third quarter.

FSU PAIR TO ENTER DRAFT >> Florida State's leading rusher, Trey Benson, will enter the NFL Draft and is opting out of the Orange Bowl game. Benson made the announcement on his Instagram.

One of the Seminoles' top defensive tackles, Fabien Lovett, also announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he would enter the NFL Draft. Lovett didn't clarify if he was opting out of the bowl game on Dec. 30 against Georgia.

Benson had a long rehab journey following major knee surgery at Oregon in 2020 but showed in his first few practices at Florida State what he was capable of achieving. He racked up 990 yards and nine touchdowns in 2022 and followed it up with 905 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in 2023.

LANGER AND SON WIN PNC >> Tiger Woods was an 18-yearold senior in high school when he made his first cut in a professional event at a European Tour event in Thailand. That also was the first time he played with Bernhard Langer.

Thirty years later, the ageless Langer is still going strong.

Langer capped off his memorable, record-setting year when he teamed with his son, Jason, to produce a 13-under 59 in 30 mph wind for a two-shot victory over David Duval and his son.

Langer tied the PNC Championship with his fifth title — three with Jason, two with older son Stefan — held by Raymond Floyd.

BENGALS' CHASE DAY TO DAY >> Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja'Marr Chase is day to day with a sprained shoulder joint, coach Zac Taylor said.

That leaves Chase questionable for next Saturday's game at Pittsburgh as Cincinnati (8-6) fights to stay in the AFC playoff race. Chase was hurt in Saturday's 27-24 overtime win against the Vikings.

TITANS HONOR WYCHECK >> The Tennessee Titans are honoring the late Frank Wycheck, who threw the lateral in the “Music City Miracle,” by wearing his old No. 89 as a sticker on their helmets against the Houston Texans.

The Titans also are wearing their Houston Oilers' throwback uniforms for this game. The sticker with Wycheck's number sits just below the American flag on the back of the helmets for the man who ranked fourth for most career catches among NFL tight ends when he retired at the age of 32.

Wycheck died Dec. 9 at his home at the age of 52.

ODERMATT WINS >> Marco Odermatt claimed a record-matching fifth straight World Cup giant slalom victory but his win at Alta Badia was by a more slender margin than the two-time defending overall World Cup champion is used to.

Odermatt heaved a sigh of relief as the Swiss star crossed the line with a combined time just 0.19 seconds faster than Filip Zubcic, who could only shake his head and smile wryly. BRIGNONE DOMINATES >> Federica Brignone dominated to win a World Cup super-G and trim the gap in the overall standings to Mikaela Shiffrin, who was one of many top skiers to fail to finish at Val d'Isere.

Brignone beat Kajsa Vickhoff Lie by almost half a second, finishing 0.44 ahead of the Norwegian skier, who was a surprise second to prevent an Italian one-two in the French Alps.
