Martin Luther King Jr. event culminates Black History Month

Chico's MLK Unity Group is collaborat­ing with Chico State's Black Student Union, the Associated Students and others to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. for the conclusion of Black History month.

The Victory in Unity event celebrates 60 years of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and will be held Sunday, Feb. 25 from 1-6 p.m. at Chico State's Bell Memorial Union, located at 400 W. First St.

“We must all learn to live together as brothers and sisters or we will all perish together as fools,” said King in 1965.

The program begins in Trinity Commons in front of the BMU at 1 p.m. and there will be an outdoor rally with speeches, spoken word, drumming and music. “The Arts and Facts” exhibit will be held in Room 203 where there will be activities for kids along with community and Chico State educationa­l resources. The BMU program begins at 3 p.m. with children's choirs, speakers, dancers and a Hue Vision performanc­e piece.

Keynote speaker Pastor Charles Larry Coleman, the second vice president of NAACP Butte County, will give a speech on how far people have come since the passing of the Civil Rights Act.

The event's collaborat­ors include Cherie Higgs and Khalid Hurst representi­ng Chico State Black Student Union and mentored by Game Amp Play and the members of Chico's MLK Unity Group.
