Sir — Will you be so kind as to inform the public, through the medium of your paper, concerning the law with regard to repairing public highways in the county of Butte . ...

I am incited to this call for informatio­n by the horrible conditions of the roads and enormous tax paid by me and my immediate neighbors, while getting nothing in return . ...

Nothing has been done to improve our roads, except a piece of grading on the road from Chico to Sandy Gulch, a road that was never known to be bad, winter or summer, and since it has been graded everybody avoids it as much as possible. Roads that should have been improved, and might have been improved at a small expense, are not touched at all. This is the case on the different roads leading from Chico to Nord. A “public” investigat­ion should be had about this matter. We pay our money and must have something in return . ...

Under the Boucher road law, each Supervisor district of the county is made a road district . ... The Chico district is composed of the townships of Chico, Dayton, Concow and Kimshew.

The entire road fund of the district is applicable to repairing the roads. ... The items can always be found in the published proceeding­s of the Board of Supervisor­s. If our correspond­ent will take and file the BUTTE RECORD, he will be able to tell exactly where the money goes. He is wrong in grumbling at the Sandy Gulch grade . ...

Chico township needs more and better wagon roads. Improvemen­ts are always in order on wagon roads that have been declared public highways. If any such in his vicinity, needs repairs, he should see his Supervisor … — Butte Record, April 18, 1874
