A NOTE FROM OUR CEO

-

Dear Advocate Readers,

A lot of people will soon be talking about this momentous year — 55 years since a brave group of LGBTQ+ individuals rose up against police brutality at the Stonewall Inn. What some may not know is that two years before that uprising, two gay men — Richard Mitch and Bill Rau — took their anger and started a newsletter called The Los Angeles Advocate, which would later morph into a national magazine that’s been continuously publishing for close to 60 years.

At equalpride, we’re very proud of our legacy, both with The Advocate and Out, the latter of which launched in 1992, when HIV was ravaging our community. We always thought of Pride as a way to generate positivity for an equality movement that’s often been a painful slog. This year is di erent than 1967 or 1992, yet still we find ourselves on the chopping block; our rights denied at school board meetings, state legislatures, and the Supreme Court. But, like we’ve done in the past, we take the season of Pride to honor our incredible progress and revel in the beauty and diversity of our community.

We think our Pride cover star, Wayne Brady, epitomizes the modern face of LGBTQ+ life; defining himself on his own terms and finding joy in his truth. Don’t miss our exclusive interview with Wayne, our feature on the queens of HBO’S We’re Here, all the latest political news, and much more.
