COLORADO COWS AND MULEYS
with the state’s largest herd of elk and second-largest herd of mule deer, Colorado’s Flat Tops Wilderness can help you fill the freezer and take home some bone for less than $1,000. It’s not going to be easy, though, especially if you lack horse support. Expect to hike in 2 to 3 miles every day or backpack in and set up camp. For 2017, the second-season combined deer/elk rifle season, which has solid odds for cow and deer hunters with no preference points, runs October 21–29. Tags for both deer and cow elk are draw-only, and the deadline is April 4. Missed it? Look for leftover licenses for cows, which should be plentiful starting August 1.
