The Brown­ing was one of the most com­fort­able packs in our test when it was filled with cloth­ing, and both the ri­fle car­rier and the front beaver­tail flap worked mar­velously to tote bulky or awk­ward-shaped gear. But when it was filled with 50 pounds of pota­toes—our starchy sub­sti­tute for meat—the straps pinched and the load be­came cum­ber­some. “This is more of a hik­ing pack than a hunt­ing pack,” said ex­ec­u­tive ed­i­tor Gerry Bethge.
