While many grouse hunters flock to the Up­per Penin­sula, Ku­ritzky hunts just shy of it. In the Great Lakes states, pub­lic woods are made up of na­tional, state, and county forests. Ku­ritzky says county forests seem bet­ter man­aged (tim­ber rev­enue helps fund the coun­ties), and are best for grouse and wood­cock. The more cut­ting, the more young forests—and the more birds.
