For pro­fes­sional soc­cer player Tobin Heath, soc­cer is more than a game, it’s life.

n soc­cer, the team that’s able to con­trol the mid­dle of the field is usu­ally the win­ner. That’s why the mid­fielder po­si­tion is crit­i­cal to the suc­cess of any team. Port­land Thorns mid­fielder Tobin Heath is a ver­sa­tile and solid de­fender who is “per­haps the USA’s most skill­ful player,” ac­cord­ing to the United States Soc­cer Fed­er­a­tion. Her ac­co­lades would cer­tainly sup­port that. Heath was the first over­all pick in Women’s Pro­fes­sional Soc­cer in the 2010 draft, is a twotime Olympic gold medal­ist and a FIFA Women’s World Cup sil­ver and gold medal­ist.

Heath fell in love with soc­cer at age 4 when she played at her lo­cal YMCA, and to this day, the 29-year-old still has that same just al­ways en­joyed play­ing and wanted to get bet­ter,” she says.

The de­mands of a mid­fielder are high. The po­si­tion re­quires more run­ning than other po­si­tions on the field (and more than in most other sports), so Heath trains ev­ery day. “One day a

do­ing yoga, a light jog, swim­ming, hik­ing or even stretch­ing.” Dur­ing the soc­cer sea­son, Heath typ­i­cally lifts one to two times a week, and in the off­sea­son, she in­creases that to two to three times a week. “I love train­ing,” she as­serts. “It gives me life.”

To fuel her train­ing and play­ing, Heath doesn’t fol­low any spe­cific nu­tri­tion trends; she just eats a well-bal­anced diet. “Soc­cer is a high-en­durance sport, es­pe­cially in my po­si­tion, so I have to eat to re­fuel and re­cover as quickly as pos­si­ble. For me, that means eat­ing as much good stuff as I can,” says the New Jersey na­tive. “Ev­ery­one is unique and fig­ur­ing out what works for you is im­por­tant. For in­stance, I have to have a big break­fast, smaller lunch and big­ger din­ner. All my train­ing is
