Re­searchers say yes. A study in Na­ture Neu­ro­science dis­cov­ered that stress trans­mit­ted from oth­ers can change the brain in the same way as real stress does — in­creas­ing cor­ti­sol, mak­ing you for­get­ful, caus­ing anx­i­ety and im­pair­ing mem­ory. How­ever, in fe­male mice, these ef­fects were re­versed fol­low­ing so­cial in­ter­ac­tion.
