Williams calls tackle that injured ankle a dirty play

Green Bay — On his final carry last Thursday night, Green Bay Packers running back Jamaal Williams had nowhere to run.

He was stuffed at the line of scrimmage for no gain. It looked like a basic play, nothing out of the ordinary. Except as the pile held him up, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Vince Williams twisted his right ankle outward – counterclockwise – during the tackle.

Jamaal Williams returned to the huddle, stayed on the field for the next snap, and even got a good block on a blitzing linebacker. But the Packers announced that he sustained an ankle injury.

Asked in the locker room Sunday, Jamaal Williams said he thought the tackle was “most definitely” a dirty play and said it was “very unnecessary” to twist his ankle.

“He could’ve stopped and let go of my leg a long time before,” Williams said.

The Packers haven’t had much injury luck in their backfield this camp. Aaron Jones, who is suspended for the first two regular-season games but can participate in the preseason, has missed the past two exhibitions because of a hamstring injury. Devante Mays, who was looking to bounce back from a disappointing rookie season, hasn’t practiced since Aug. 3 because of a hamstring injury. Williams said he expects to practice this week. “It’s nothing serious,” he said. Regardless, the Packers spent their weekend examining their running back depth chart. They placed tailback Akeem Judd on the reserve/retired list Saturday and signed tailback LeShun Daniels, a firstyear player out of Iowa. On Sunday, they signed running back Bronson Hill.

Hill originally signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted rookie out of Eastern Michigan in 2015. He has spent time with several NFL teams, including practice-squad stints with the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars. He played three games with the Jaguars in 2016 and two games for the Cardinals last season.

Daniels, a college teammate of Packers rookie cornerback Josh Jackson, originally signed with the New England Patriots as a free agent after the 2017 draft. He spent time last season on the Los Angeles Chargers’ practice squad before signing with Washington, which promoted him to the active roster for four games. Daniels eventually was placed on injured reserve in late December with a hand injury.

Packers running back Jamaal Williams had his ankle twisted during the Steelers game, but says the injury is not serious.
