Favre, Austin share tales on TV show

- Kendra Meinert

Brett Favre swapped stories with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin on a episode of “Straight Up Steve Austin” last week on USA Network.

The free-form interview show featured the NFL Hall of Famer and the WWE Hall of Famer as they went fishing, shot bow and arrow, and threw the football around in Favre’s home state of Mississippi.

Favre talked about his decision to play on “Monday Night Football” in 2003, the day after his father, Irvin, died of a heart attack.

“I can just hear him: ‘Bullsh--, you’re sitting out. You better get your ass out there and play,’” Favre tells Austin while they’re out on the water. “So the easy decision was to play. The hard part was to play at a level that I felt in my mind was honoring him.”

Favre passed for 399 yards and four touchdowns in the Green Bay Packers’ victory over the Oakland Raiders that night.

Favre also spoke about playing for the rival Minnesota Vikings after leaving the Packers.

“Going to Minnesota was something that obviously I never thought I would do, especially being a diehard Packer for so many years, and I hated playing there, because we could not win in Minnesota,” he said.

It’s a story told over lunch that allows the 51-year-old Favre to work in an “I’m not no spring chicken.”

Austin told “The Rich Eisen Show” in January the two immediately hit it off. “We bonded from the moment we shook hands until we parted ways. He’s an unbelievable guy. To spend a day with the gunslinger, very cool.”

For each episode of “Straight Up,” Austin welcomes a celebrity guest for a conversation about their lives while out having fun. A full day of shooting is edited into a half-hour show.
