Elle Marja, a teenage reindeer breeder of the Sami people, is sent to boarding school with her sister when their mother cannot afford to care for them anymore. At school, she experiences racism and forced assimilation similar to that faced by Native American children in the early part of the 20th century, including being forbidden to speak her language and undergoing humiliating public medical examinations. Elle Marja finds a talent for following teachers’ instructions and soon longs to shed her Sami identity and fit into Swedish society. This means abandoning her traditional dress and stealing modern fashionable clothes — and that’s just the beginning of the actions she takes.
