Emerg­ing from the chrysalis: New leads for Madama But­ter­fly

On Mon­day, July 30, new singers take over the two lead­ing roles in Santa Fe Opera’s lu­mi­nous pro­duc­tion of Madama But­ter­fly. As­sum­ing the part of CioCio-San is so­prano Ana María Martínez, re­mem­bered from her ap­pear­ances here in an­other Puc­cini lead — Mimì in La bo­hème (2011) — and as the ti­tle hero­ine of Carmen (2014). At the same time, the char­ac­ter of love-’em-an­dleave-’em Lt. Pinker­ton will be en­trusted to tenor Joshua Guer­rero, a former com­pany ap­pren­tice artist who filled in as Romeo one night dur­ing the 2016 run of Gounod’s Roméo et Juli­ette.
