Emerging from the chrysalis: New leads for Madama Butterfly
On Monday, July 30, new singers take over the two leading roles in Santa Fe Opera’s luminous production of Madama Butterfly. Assuming the part of CioCio-San is soprano Ana María Martínez, remembered from her appearances here in another Puccini lead — Mimì in La bohème (2011) — and as the title heroine of Carmen (2014). At the same time, the character of love-’em-andleave-’em Lt. Pinkerton will be entrusted to tenor Joshua Guerrero, a former company apprentice artist who filled in as Romeo one night during the 2016 run of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. Both continue until the production closes on Aug. 24. For ticket prices and availability, consult santafeopera.org; 505-986-5900 or 800-280-4654. — J.M.K.
