David Syre: Bik­ing Haleakala 2013, acrylic on re­claimed wood

Ellsworth Gallery, 215 E. Palace Ave., 505-989-7900 An ex­hibit of ap­prox­i­mately 25 paint­ings and draw­ings by David Syre opens on Fri­day, Sept. 14, with a 5:30 p.m. re­cep­tion. Guestcu­rated by Ar­gen­tine cu­ra­tor Ana Pala­cio, the show in­cludes a selec­tion of works that re­flect Syre’s in­ter­est in the Tierra del Fuego prov­ince and its in­dige­nous Ona peo­ple. In ad­di­tion, a video and in­stal­la­tion called Ona Spirit is also on view. Ti­tled Soul Maps: The Jour­ney Evolves, the ex­hi­bi­tion is part of a 2018 se­ries in­spired by Syre’s trav­els, which be­gan with a show­ing in Nice in May and con­cludes with an ex­hibit in Buenos Aires in Novem­ber. Syre is a self­taught artist who uses his medium to ex­plore spir­i­tual evo­lu­tion and con­nec­tion to place through pow­er­ful ab­stract im­agery.
