Alia Ali: From the BORDERLAND series
2017, digital photograph
East of West, 2351 Fox Road, No. 600, 505-570-7708 In her BORDERLAND series, multimedia artist Alia Ali re-examines the demarcated zones that mark national borders as fluid spaces that embody the natural interactions among people as they create their existence in proximity to each other and their surroundings. The figures in her portraits, called “—cludes,” are draped in textiles from 11 international regions. Each individual is an artisan from a community affected by power struggles and destruction, and each wears fabric creations of their own. An artist and curator talk takes place at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, followed by a 6:30 p.m. reception.
