Michelle Y Williams: Cut 18-1158 2018, painted metal and Plexiglas
Matthews Gallery, 669 Canyon Road, 505-992-2882 Artist Michelle Y Williams uses a palette knife to create compositions on metal, Plexiglas, canvas, and wood, often mixing raw materials into the paint. “The inspiration for my work is both selective and indiscriminate,” she said. “After the initial influence sparks the beginning of a painting, the piece generally takes on a vision of its own ...” She describes her process as a developing relationship between herself and a composition. Her paintings have a sense of immediacy and a beguiling simplicity where gestural, linear forms interact with nebulous space. Though primarily abstract, they occasionally contain figurative elements. The gallery features new works by Williams.
