A longtime romance with the open road leads him on numerous road trips across the country, seeking inspiration in the Americana he encounters along the way. Middlekauff imbues his paintings with a variety of pop culture references, including cartoons, advertisements, images of movie idols and rock stars, and the iconic symbol of the American West, the cowboy. His solo exhibition Santa Fe Pop! opens on Friday, Sept. 6. “I want people who come to this show to see something old in a new way, to feel the same way I feel in my studio, painting and listening to ‘50s and ‘60s rock and roll music, dancing around, throwing paint,” he said in a statement. The reception for Santa Fe Pop! is at 5 p.m. The show is up through Sept. 26.
