David Rothermel Contemporary, 228 Old Santa Fe Trail, 575-642-4981, drcontemporary.com German-born painter Hans Hofmann was considered an early influence on Abstract Expressionism and was a key figure in its later development as well. Throughout his career, he explored the theory of “push and pull,” based on the idea of interdependent relationships between form, color, and space. Contemporary painter David Rothermel pays tribute to the towering figure of 20th-century art with a new series of paintings, on view in the exhibit Rothermel: Homage to Hans. Working primarily with rectangular shapes, Rothermel, who was influenced by Hofmann as a young artist, continues to explore the aesthetic principles championed by the seminal postwar artist. The show is currently on view, and remains up through Sept. 27.
