Sharon Markwardt, Happy Daze (2019), oil on canvas

-

Manitou Galleries, 225 Canyon Road, 505-986-9833, manitougalleries.com Sharon Markwardt was formerly a watercolorist, but after sustaining an injury from a fall from a horse in 2006 (which didn’t prevent her from climbing back up on the horse), she used her newfound courage to move to oil painting, creating bold, colorful scenes of the West and equine themes. Today, ranch animals are a frequent motif for the artist, who seeks to capture their expressive nature and reveal their souls. She joins a group show with sculptor Greyshoes (Upton S. Ethelbah Jr.), who creates contemporary sculptures of Native subject matter that he renders with a modernist aesthetic, and painter Fran Larson, who captures scenes of New Mexico in boldly colored, vibrant compositions. The exhibition Color Story is currently on view and is up through Oct. 6.
