Downwind documentary at the Santa Fe Main Library
The documentary Downwind (2023) focuses on the longlasting effects of nuclear weapons testing on people who live near test sites.
One might assume it’s set in New Mexico, and it certainly resonates here. But the setting is Mercury, Nevada, a closed village that serves as the office area for the Nevada National Security Site, which operated from 1951 to 1992. Mercury is about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, by car.
After a showing of the 2023 documentary, director, writer, and producer Mark Shapiro will field questions. Actor Martin Sheen narrates the film. — B.S.
