DRONING IN THE DEEP BLUE
A leader in underwater drone technology, OpenROV is taking orders for their latest design—the Trident submersible remotely operated vehicle (ROV). It comes with an 82-foot tether, and is ready to dive pretty much as soon as you open the box and get near some deep water. We find the applications are limitless for this 1080p camera-enabled sub, even outside of its diving/exploring potential. Want to find out how much damage your hull took when you scraped bottom? Launch the Trident and see for yourself. Want to see how badly you ensnared your prop on that lobster pot? Easy. Want to have a forward-facing look at the seafloor in skinny water? No problem. Of course, the applications go well beyond these if you’re at all interested in exploring shipwrecks, deepdwelling sealife, or discovering Atlantis. With an optional 100-meter tether (328 feet), the diving and running capabilities (up to 4 hours on a charge) allow you to explore the deeps without getting wet. Simply launch the tethered radio buoy and 7-pound sub into the water, and command the vessel via your tablet, laptop, or even your phone. The ROV’s onboard sensors communicate data points to the radio buoy, which the beacon then relays straight to your command device of choice. Powered by three DC motors that can push the sub up to four knots underwater, the submersible can also relay depth information, water temperature, and has an onboard compass.
