BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES
1956 ackie Jordan’s third straight one-hitter, plus some timely hitting by Eddie Ferns, supplied Saint Raphael Academy with its sixth Eastern Division victory, a 6-1 conquest of De La Salle at Cardines Field. Jordan fanned 17 Crusaders, passed eight and his consecutive scoreless inning streak was snapped at 29 when Joe Walker’s fourth frame single over third base spoiled Jordan’s bid for a no-hitter and scored John Franco. Ferns collected two run-scoring singles and Pete Vitullo, who stroked the ball with authority, tallied two runs and a double.
1966 Roger Robidoux’s two-out single through the hole in right field scored Paul LaChapelle with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning as Woonsocket nipped Cumberland 2-1 at Barry Field. Right-hander Rene Demers handcuffed the Clippers yielding four hits, striking out seven and walking two in going the extra inning distance. The Villa Novans tallied their first run on Roger Pincince’s double and LaChapelle’s single in the fourth inning.
