PC dance troupe stag­ing an­nual con­cert Nov. 16, 17


PROV­I­DENCE – Pre­sented by the De­part­ment of Theatre, Dance & Film, the Prov­i­dence Col­lege Dance Com­pany will per­form its an­nual Black­fri­ars Dance Con­cert on Fri­day, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m., and Satur­day, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. in the An­gell Black­fri­ars Theatre.

The pro­duc­tion will present orig­i­nal dance works cre­ated by both guest chore­og­ra­phers and PC dance fac­ulty, all un­der the di­rec­tion of Dr. Wendy Oliver.

Chore­og­ra­phers for fall 2018 in­clude Ann Dit­mars Huyck, Melody Gamba, Jessie Jeanne Stin­nett, Jes­sica Pear­son, Jenna Pol­lack, and Oliver. Huyck, who teaches bal­let at PC, will present a con­tem­po­rary bal­let piece fea­tur­ing move­ment driven by the chang­ing en­ergy and mood in the sec­ond of Schu­bert’s “Three Piano Pieces.”

Gamba, a vis­it­ing artist at PC, will present a jazz dance that ex­plores the per­son­al­ity of each dancer while em­body­ing the rhythms of the mu­sic it is set to. Stin­nett, di­rec­tor of her own dance com­pany and co-artis­tic di­rec­tor of Bos­ton Dance Theater, will present a piece that will ap­pear to au­di­ence mem­bers like scenes of a film, with dif­fer­ent frames for the viewer. Pear­son teaches full-time at Rhode Is­land Col­lege, and will present a modern piece set to a trio of songs by com­poser Michael Wall. Pol­lack, a Bos­ton-based per­former, maker and ed­u­ca­tor, will present her piece ti­tled “slipped/ sprouted,” which she is cre­at­ing in col­lab­o­ra­tion with her dancers. Oliver, pro­fes­sor of dance and women’s stud­ies at PC and di­rec­tor of the PC Dance Com­pany, will present “Line Dance,” a se­ries of play­ful in­ter­pre­ta­tions of its ti­tle, chore­ographed to string quar­tets by W.A. Mozart.

Tick­ets may be pur­chased on­line at theatre. prov­i­dence.edu, or in per­son at the Box Of­fice at the Smith Cen­ter for the Arts, lo­cated in the main lobby of the build­ing, open Mon­day through Fri­day from 1 to 4 p.m., as well as one hour prior to per­for­mances. All seats are $5 and seat­ing is gen­eral ad­mis­sion.
