PC dance troupe staging annual concert Nov. 16, 17
PROVIDENCE – Presented by the Department of Theatre, Dance & Film, the Providence College Dance Company will perform its annual Blackfriars Dance Concert on Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. in the Angell Blackfriars Theatre.
The production will present original dance works created by both guest choreographers and PC dance faculty, all under the direction of Dr. Wendy Oliver.
Choreographers for fall 2018 include Ann Ditmars Huyck, Melody Gamba, Jessie Jeanne Stinnett, Jessica Pearson, Jenna Pollack, and Oliver. Huyck, who teaches ballet at PC, will present a contemporary ballet piece featuring movement driven by the changing energy and mood in the second of Schubert’s “Three Piano Pieces.”
Gamba, a visiting artist at PC, will present a jazz dance that explores the personality of each dancer while embodying the rhythms of the music it is set to. Stinnett, director of her own dance company and co-artistic director of Boston Dance Theater, will present a piece that will appear to audience members like scenes of a film, with different frames for the viewer. Pearson teaches full-time at Rhode Island College, and will present a modern piece set to a trio of songs by composer Michael Wall. Pollack, a Boston-based performer, maker and educator, will present her piece titled “slipped/ sprouted,” which she is creating in collaboration with her dancers. Oliver, professor of dance and women’s studies at PC and director of the PC Dance Company, will present “Line Dance,” a series of playful interpretations of its title, choreographed to string quartets by W.A. Mozart.
