1954 Jack Smith and Jeff Schofield were the only Redjackets
to account for individual victories as coach Max Read’s Pawtucket East mermen were handed a 45-30 setback by the unbeaten UConn freshmen swimming team. Smith put on a terrific diving display to win this event handily with his best effort a half gainer, half twist which netted him 13.1 points. Schofield easily captured the 200-yard freestyle in the fast time of 2:12.5. 1964 Paul Stanlewicz and Greg Lukasiewicz provided the im
portant points down the stretch as Cumberland’s surprising Clippers, six points down at halftime, rallied for a 63-60 upset over defending Class B champion North Providence in a thriller. John McVeigh led Cumberland’s well-balanced offense with 17 points, Lukasiewicz sank 16, Don Heald drained 11, little George Souza had nine and 6-foot-2 Stanlewicz added eight. The victory squared the Clipper’s league record at 1-1 and 4-6 overall. 1974 Melanie Fortin won two events and Cathy Smith captured
one with good performances in a losing cause as Tolman bowed to East Providence 57-38 in a dual swim meet at the Tigers pool. Miss Fortin, a sophomore, was a double winner for the second straight meet as she took the 200-yard individual medley (2:26.7) and 100 butterfly (1:07.5). Miss Smith, also a sophomore, was victorious in the diving event with a score of 152.56. Ron Velzis, Smith, Roberta Fortin and Paul MarcAurele triumphed in the 400 freestyle relay.
