Nominees sought for Pawtucket ‘ Teen Hall of Fame’
PAWTUCKET – Nominations are now being accepted for the Pawtucket Prevention
Coalition Teen Hall of Fame, which is designed to recognize those residents who have contributed to bettering their community through volunteer work.
They will be accepted until Friday, May 27, at 4 p.m. The induction ceremony is slated for Wednesday, June 8, at 6 p.m. at Pawtucket Country Club.
To access an application for your favorite, conscientious teen-ager, call Diane Dufresne at (401) 663-4947.
“This is our first time having the event in two years,” said Melissa Flaherty, the
coalition’s Drug-Free Communities Grant Coordinator. “The primary purpose of the
event is to recognize Pawtucket youth between 13-19 who are making a positive contribution through community service.
“The secondary purpose is to enhance the image that teens have in our city,” she added, “to show that many of our teens are a significant community resource rather than a community problem.”
To be eligible for nomination, which may be made by
anyone, a teen must document a minimum of 40 hours of volunteer community service in the 12 months prior to the nomination deadline. Prior years of community service initiatives are also taken into account by the subcommittee that reviews the nomination applications.
In addition, at least one of the recommendations must be from an adult who supervised the teen’s volunteer community service in some capacity. The quality of that community service provided also is an important selection criterion. The quality/intention of the service will be taken into account by that subcommittee’s review of each nomination form.
Priority will be given to those applicants who have provided volunteer community service in the previous 12 months, but also have a history of providing similar service in the past. Although all community service will be considered, those efforts occurring within city borders will be given priority.
Teens who are inducted receive a gift bag and citations not only from the city but the General Assembly as well.
It should be noted that nomination forms may be dropped off in the reception areas at City Hall or the Pawtucket School Department. They should be clearly marked to go to the Pawtucket Prevention Coalition.
