1952 Chuck Scherza of the R. I. Reds arrived back in Pawtucket today from Manitoba and immediately began the job of finding a home for himself, Mrs. Scherza and their three children. Scherza returned to Manitoba recently due to the death of his father. The Scherzas’ were out early this morning looking for a place to live and Chuck dropped into the Times’ sports department to enlist its aid in finding a home here.
1962 Norm Coutu tallied on scampers of 40 and 15 yards and also rushed a two-point conversion to lead the Woonsocket Italian Working Men’s Club to a 14-6 victory over the Fairlawn Cardinals and clinch the R. I. Pre-Teen Football League’s Northern Division pennant. Coutu wound up the season with a record breaking 126 points, while Ernie Pooler scored the Cards’ lone touchdown on a 30-yard end run. In another tilt, a 45-yard pass-run play from Tom O’Connor to Kevin Condon and Condon’s PAT plunge gave the Cumberland Colts a 7-6 win over the Attleboro Jewelry City Juniors.
1972 Gabe Gregorio rattled the pins for a 162 single string and a three-game series of 396 to cop top honors in the House Duckpin League at the Darlington Lanes. Other leaders were Don Frechette 157-391, George Kaha 386, Ron Deschenes 385, Joe Malloy 376, Mike Godbout 375, Bob Archambault 374, Mike Kagan 365, Don Courtemanche 364, Harry Barlow 360, Mike Mirza 359, Ed Keenan 358, Joe Haddad 352 and Al Caron 351.
