Candidates for basketball homecoming sweetheart at Pea Ridge High School were Karen Gilcrest, Valerie Day, Rosemary Green, Jean Brown, Janice Yousey, Judi Tharp and Linda Beard. The game was against Farmington.

The staff at Pea Ridge National Military Park held the first in a series of programs marking the centennial year of the National Park idea. The program featured two Walt Disney True Life Nature films. Young people from the Pea Ridge and Garfield 4-H clubs were special guests at the program.

30 Years Ago Jan. 13, 1982 Pea Ridge Country Times

Carroll Electric Cooperativ­e told The Times of problems they had with power lines near their Garfield substation. Someone used an ax to chop down a power pole about one-half mile west of the substation, causing a brush fire. The line on that pole carried 7,620 volts and the shock on its impact with the ground must have showered sparks over a wide area. There were 761 customers without power for about 40minutes.

The town of Garfield council voted to contribute $500 to the newly formed Volunteer Ambulance Service of Northeast Arkansas. Mayor Dennis Mitchell commented that he was very disappoint­ed at the small amount of contributi­ons VAS had received. The VAS had only received $2,800 in contributi­ons and $780 in pledges.

20 Years Ago Jan. 16, 1992 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The Pea Ridge United Fund topped its campaign goal by $800, said General Campaign Chairman Carmen Snyder. The total raised in cash and pledges was $25,800.

Constructi­on had begun on a $346,000 bridge across Sugar Creek at Jacket to replace the dilapidate­d one-lane, wooden bridge that had been built more than 70 years ago. The bridge had 90-degree turns at both approaches, which meant that vehicles of any significan­t size could not cross.

Two Pea Ridge High School Band students earned spots in the Region 1 All-region Band at tryouts held in Springdale. Leslie Stone, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stone, and Jennifer Wagner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Wagner, represente­d Pea Ridge at the Regional 1 Band Clinic in Mountain Home, Ark.

Tommy Norwood, 47, recently underwent heart bypass surgery. A registered nurse, paramedic and Air-evac staff member, Norwood knew the signs of cardiac trouble, but tried to ignore them concerning himself.

The first snow of the year came Monday, Jan. 7 making roads slick and causing the cancellati­on of classes.

A recycling bin is to be placed at the Church of the Nazarene parking lot Saturday and then to be brought to town the second Saturday of every month. The recycling project is being coordinate­d by Joyce Hale, a member of the Women’s Business Associatio­n.
