Pfc. Roy J. Shorter, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Shorter, Pea Ridge, came home on an 18-day leave. Shorter graduated from a Chicago, Ill., high school, and was stationed in Germany permanentl­y.

The Garfield City Council met and passed an ordinance that any persons renting a house within the city limits would be required to pay a $20 water deposit, instead of the usual $10. This was due to the fact that some renters moved away without paying their bill and the $10 deposit would not cover it. Property owners still pay $10. The fee to have water service turned back on was $5.

The threat of heavy snow, possibly blizzard conditions, forecast for the northeast part of the state, including Benton and Carroll counties, forced early printing of the TIMES.

Pea Ridge officials, including city government, Library Board, Planning Commission and Park Commission members filed their Code of Ethics disclosure forms as provided by the state law.

Lester Cruse, retired pilot for TWA who spent 12 years flying contracts for the Saudi Arabian government, described his experience­s in Saudi Arabia to the Pea Ridge Christian Men’s Breakfast group.

David Cauldwell, top administra­tive aide to Benton County Judge Al Norwood, became the first Democratic candidate to announce for the County Collector’s post. Cauldwell, 31, who was also service officer to the Benton County Planning Board, hoped to fill the vacancy created by incumbent Collector Joe Yates’ announced inten- tions to run for State Senate.

Stephen Adams was named superinten­dent of the Pea Ridge National Military Park, following the resignatio­n of Jim Gott who had been the superinten­dent for the previous two years. Adams, a native of Tucson, Ariz., earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropolo­gy at the University of Arkansas and a master’s in anthropolo­gy at the University of Arizona.

The Volunteer Ambulance Service of Northeast Benton County responded to 13 emergency calls during the month of Janu- ary 1992. VAS personnel treated and transporte­d the patients of two vehicle accidents, three miscellane­ous and eight medical emergencie­s.

The Pea Ridge Ministeria­l Alliance met during the month of January at the Pea Ridge Church of the Nazarene. The ministeria­l alliance delivered approximat­ely 3,000 pounds of food to needy families in the community during the Christmas holidays.

Benton County

An Arkansas -Missouri Railroad train derailed spilling soybean meal and aluminum bars into sur- rounding pastures in Garfield. The train made up of six locomotive­s and 15 cars, was southbound east of U.S. Highway 62 when the incident occurred. The cause, unknown at the time, was under investigat­ion.

After serving seven terms and 14 years, Benton County Sheriff Andy Lee announced he would not seek the Republican nomination for sheriff and decided to hang up his badge. Lee said that it was time for another person to be sheriff and take the office in a direction beneficial to the county, and that he was proud to lead the Sheriff’s Office as it matured to deal with a growing county.
