Keith Escue was re-elected as Pea Ridge School Board president, Royle Carnes was elected to serve as vice president and Jack Lasater was re-elected as secretary of the board.
Pea Ridge City Water Superintendent Charles Hardy attended the 41st Annual Conference and short school for the Arkansas Water Works and Pollution Control Association at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs.
Miss Sherry Weimer, daughter of F.M. Weimer of Garfield, was a contestant in the state finals of a speech tournament sponsored by the Southern Baptist Association.
Garfield PTA elected officers, who were: Mrs. Don Stockton, president; Mrs. Stanley Williams, vice president; Mrs. Ruth Hurd, treasurer; and Mrs. Vivian Mahurin, secretary.

In a three week period of time, tornadoes had been reported in the four-states area which included Pea Ridge country. Pea Ridge residents were fortunate because the tornadoes missed Pea Ridge country.
Nine years and three months after the city began negotiating to get the sewer project underway, all the varied pieces were pulled together by city, state and federal interests, contracts were completed, work orders issued and the $2,321,248 construction project began.
Spokespersons for the Avoca, NEBCO and Pea Ridge volunteer fire departments all indicated to the TIMES that arson was suspected in a rash of brush and timber fires in the area between Avoca and Garfield east of U.S. Hwy. 62.
Paul Simpkins, PRHS senior, received state recognition for his pastel picture of Doberman Pinschers at the Young Arkansas Artists competition in Little Rock. His art
instructor was Wanda Roe.

Garfield’s mayor, Wanda Mahurin, believed that in order to gain control of future growth in the town of a little more than 300 people, the establishment of a planning commission should be examined.
A third Pea Ridge area resident entered the race for the new District 4 House of Representatives seat. Randy Bryant filed for the Republican nomination for the position.
The state Highway Department installed a sign at Arkansas highways 71 and 102 to notify motorists of one way to reach Pea Ridge National Military park.

At the request of the Avoca Town Council, the Arkansas Highway Department agreed to place a stoplight at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62 and Benton County Road 74 (Rose Street).
The Pea Ridge Elementary PTO and the Middle School P.I.E.S. group had a “Welcome Party” for the new school superintendent, Dr. Virgil Freeman.
Seventh graders Patricia Butler and Leah Rice won third place at the Regional Science Fair for their project measuring the differences in the ability to smell among various age groups for men and women.
