40 Years Ago Thursday, Jan. 25, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The Pea Ridge Elementary School underwent its annual evaluation by the State Department of Education, and was again awarded the maximum rating of an “A.”

The City of Pea Ridge would use more than half of its revenue sharing money for 1972 to pay off the balance of an $11,000 debt for street repair work done in 1972. An undetermin­ed amount of the balance would be used for remodeling and redecorati­ng of City Hall.

Pea Ridge was host to a Boy Scout camporee as approximat­ely 200 Boy Scouts from Benton, Washington and Madison Counties camped at beautiful Stroud Springs three miles west of town.

Jay Hale was named as Planning Commission chairman in Pea Ridge. Other officers elected by the commission were Carl Baggett, vice chairman, and Golda Calvin, secretary.

30 Years Ago Wednesday, Jan. 26, 1983 Pea Ridge Country Times

A grant of $520,000 and a loan of $335,000 were approved for the Gateway Rural Water Associatio­n by the Farmers Home Administra­tion, according to Cong. John Paul Hammerschm­idt’s office. The funds, for the constructi­on of a well, water treatment facility and storage facilities to serve 200 rural customers and businesses was approved under authority of the Rural Developmen­t Act of 1972.

Junior girls Blackhawks were winners over the Shiloh Saints, bagging their first win of the season. Participat­ing in the win for the team were Robbi Scales, Rhonda Stanley, Lisa Webb, Lisa Larson, Tonya Wilkins, Deena Patterson, DeAnn Carlson and Audrey Krueger.

With the deadline passed, only one candidate had filed for the opening on the Pea Ridge School Board. Kent Webb filed for re-election to a five-year term.

Bonnie Sutton, graduate of Pea Ridge High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sutton, Sr., was named a cheerleade­r at the College of the Ozarks, Clarksvill­e.

20 Years Ago Thursday, Jan. 28, 1993 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The Winston Spring house, an early 20th Century structure near the beginning of the Pea Ridge National Military Park tour road, was to be razed. The house, in a deteriorat­ed condition, was to be demolished because of its lack of historical significan­ce to the 1862 Battle of Pea Ridge.

The Rev. David Watson was appointed as the new pastor of Pea Ridge Freewill Baptist Church.

The Pea Ridge School Board and a former elementary school principal, Paul Terry, settled a lawsuit out of court for an undisclose­d amount. Terry had claimed sexual discrimina­tion, breach of contract and violation of the Arkansas Teacher Fair Dismissal Act in a lawsuit filed in federal court.

Mark A. Howell was promoted in the U.S. Army to the rank of sergeant. Howell, a criminal investigat­or, was a 1981 graduate of Pea Ridge

High School.

Pea Ridge country was hit with another 4-5 inches of snow, closing schools.

Mayor Jackie Crabtree, city officials and interested volunteers, set up working committees to begin the process of planning for the long-range future of Pea Ridge at the first “Visions” meeting of the year. Approximat­ely 20 people attended the meeting.

The Rogers/Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting at North Shore Realty, 14870 Mill Street, Garfield, to welcome new owners David and Karma Nees.
