Sloans win chili cook-off

GARFIELD — The ninth annual NEBCO Fire Department Chili Cook-Off was held on Saturday, March 16, at Station No. 1 and the Community Room with 19 chili cookers stirring up their favorite recipes for the more than 275 tasters who came out to support the event.

Chief Rob Taylor said: “We hope to raise something over $2,000 with this event, which goes toward needed equipment for the fire department.” Chefs for the cook-off cooked up five gallons of chili that was judged by a panel of tasters and tickets were sold at the door to select the “People’s Choice” winner. Best booth and presentati­on was also noted by the judges to select a top booth.

Winners included: End of the Road Acres — Chef Bruce and Barbara Sloan, first place; Freedom Bank of Southern Missouri — Chef Pete Rathmell, second place; Lake Pest Control — Chef Missy Seamster, third place; Beaver Lake Pest Control — Chef Missy Seamster, People’s Choice; and End of the Road Acres, Best Presentati­on.

Also available at the cook-off were raffle tickets for a handmade quilt donated by S.A.B.L.E. Quilting done by Sonya Koch, and ample assortment of desserts that were at the serving table.

The next fund raising event on the schedule for NEBCO is the May 27 Country Breakfast which will raise money for the EMS service. First-place winners Bruce and Barbara Sloan with NEBCO board member Sam Reynolds; the Sloans own End of the Road Acres.
