40 Years Ago Thursday, March 14, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The Pea Ridge Hardware and Building Supply, located at the former site of the Pea Ridge Lumber Co., announced that it was getting stock in and expected to be ready for an official opening by April 1. The new business was owned by Alva Johnson and Robert Whitmer, both of Pea Ridge.

Pea Ridge city alderman Dean Messer submitted his resignatio­n by letter to the City Council at the monthly meeting.

Members of Beta Alpha Sorority of Epsilon Sigma Alpha held their February social and elected the sorority’s 1973 Sweetheart and Beau, Mrs. Arvel Creekmore and Mr. Allen Gastineau.

The first meeting of the Girl Scouts in Garfield was held at the Garfield Grade School. Troop leaders and assistants included Mrs. Carolyn Taylor, Mrs. Alice Carter, Mrs. Dorothy Williams and Mrs. Dale Kroll.

At an “informal meeting,” 19 certified teachers from the Pea Ridge Elementary School presented their views of Principal Doug Albertson’s job performanc­e to four members of the School Dist. 109 Board of Directors.

The Avoca City Council discussed requiring building permits for businesses building within the city, hired Jay Lynch to do all needed work on the city’s road grader and voted to give the Volunteer Fire Department $1,000 toward constructi­on of its 1,200 square-foot addition.

The Gateway Town Council voted to complete a 12-foot by 12-foot addition to the City Hall building acquired last year.

The following students received superior ratings, Div. 1, during the Region 1 Solo and Ensemble competitio­n: Danny Prophet, senior, clarinet solo; Michael Schooley, seventh-grade, percussion solo; Prophet and Kim Hileman, junior, clarinet duet; Denise Nichol, junior, and Micah Looney, also a junior, clarinet duet.

The Pea Ridge Lions Club completed the installati­on of insulation in the Pea Ridge Extension Homemakers Building, according to Lions Club president Larry Widdifield.

Terry Thomas of Garfield, a member of the Avoca Volunteer Fire Department, graduated from the second annual Urban First Responder Training Course sponsored by the Benton County Search and Rescue Unit.

Jennifer Wagner of Pea Ridge and a member of the Battlefiel­d 4-H Club won a trophy in the 4-H Talent-Alive in America county talent contest.

While cutting student and faculty programs and trips, claiming dire financial times for the Pea Ridge District, Dr. Virgil Freeman, former superin- tendent of the district, had been double billing the district for his travel expenses up to $300, district expense records indicate.

Gary Wayman, principal at Pea Ridge High School for six years, resigned his post to take the position of superinten­dent of Junction City, Ark.

Pea Ridge Planning Commission­ers accepted the final plat for Sugar Creek Estates, a subdivisio­n planned by Franklin Miller near Big Sugar Golf Course, during a lengthy meeting.

The Pea Ridge High School baseball team picked up its 300th and 301st wins by forfeit. Eureka Springs had to forfeit the scheduled games due to lack of players.
