Gateway researches who owns roads

- BY ANNETTE BEARD

GATEWAY — Maintaining roads is one of the primary functions of a small town and Gateway city officials are trying to determine which roads are the responsibility of the city, according to Sherry Robinette, clerk-recorder.

A special meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in the Garfield City Hall.

“We decided to hold it there in case we had a big crowd,” Robinette said, explaining that Gateway

City Hall is small.

Mayor David White, contacted Tuesday, said he did not know anything about it because he resigned the first of the month.

Robinette said the city street employee, James Appleton, and the city at- torney, Joanne McCracken, have been working with Benton County officials trying to assess which roads are private, which are city and which are county. She said city officials have not found records indicating any roads dedicated to the city.

“The Town Council would like the opportunity to present the facts to the residents of Gateway and hear concerns about this issue,” Robinette said, adding that the meeting will be to gather information as well as to inform the public.

“In addition to this meeting, residents are always welcome at council meetings which occur on the second Tuesday of each month at Gateway Town Hall,” Robinette said.
