Local winners score big
Several Pea Ridge Elementary School students were among the winners announced at the annual statewide “Collaboration of the Arts” visual art festival in Little Rock recently.
Work submitted by John McGee, the primary and intermediate school art teacher, was entered in March with the final judging results announced last week. Six primary school students and three intermediate artists will be presented with certificates and cash prizes at a special awards presentation in downtown Little Rock on May 3. First place winners will take home $100 with second places earning $50, third places $25 and fourth places $15.
The primary school students came away with half of the awards to be presented, led by kindergartener Cara Bowie’s first-place crayon and tempera depiction of an owl. Another kindergartener, Kailynda Hackler, was awarded second place for her painting “Angry Bear” with classmate Tyce Evenson landing fourth place for his crayon and tempera picture of Dogwood flowers.
First grader Nic Hiett took second place with his drawing of a raccoon while classmate Kamden Hissong earned fourth for his tempera painting of a deer. Second grader Chloe Jennings rounded out the primary winners with her second place crayon and tempera picture “Having a Wild Lunch.”
One student in each of the three intermediate grades was chosen for the awards stand. Third grader Mikayla Humphreys was second for painting of lake fishermen, fourth grader Dillon Brouse won fourth for his painting of a wolf with fifth grader Stephanie Harris taking third place for a landscape painting.
All the winning artwork will be on display in Little Rock for the month of May with the show moving on for display in Fort Smith for the month of June. The artwork on display in Jonesboro in July with a final show in Pine Bluff throughout August. In addition, the winning artwork will be reproduced in the 2014 Arkansas Conservation calendar.
This marks the fifth year that several Pea Ridge students have earned awards at the yearly statewide competition. More than 20 different northwest Arkansas artists have made the awards stand at the event held in the market place area of downtown Little Rock.
