James Mayfield was administer­ed the oath of office by Mayor Jack Musteen. He filled a vacancy created by the resignatio­n of Dean Messer.

The Rev. Joseph Swan, who retired to Pea Ridge in the summer of 1970, and who had ministered in various churches as a supply pastor and special speaker, was asked and accepted the pastorate of Lowell Community Church at Lowell.

“Through the Looking Glass” was the theme of the style show presented by the Home Economics students for the PTA. Models were: Susie Moore, Yvonna Shrader, Brenda Cook, Edith McLaughin, Susan Turek, Martha Simpson, Debra Johnson, Ruth Arnold, Janet Johnson, Sandra Shrader, Valerie Day, Joanna Whitney, Karen Gilchrist, Sereta Rush, Norma Aaron, Robbin Whisenhunt and Cheryl Snow.

At the regular monthly meeting, Pea Ridge City Council unanimousl­y adopted Ord. 116, a lengthy sewer use ordinance required by the Environmen­tal Protection Agency.

Pea Ridge Deputy Marshal Dave Fellows reported he and another citizen were watching the sky when they saw what they first thought was fireworks down near the Rogers airport. Identity of the bright objects had not been establishe­d. Nothing was discovered on the ground to show whether it was meteorites or space junk burning up.

An agreement with the Volunteer Ambulance Service of Northeast Benton County for the use of the Gateway Town Hall building for VAS operations was approved by the Gateway Town Council.

It was announced that James Dickey, assistant basketball coach, University of Arkansas, would be the main speaker at the Pea Ridge senior athletic banquet.

Long-time cook and waitress Sherry Nesbitt assumed management of what was Wanda’s Cafe on East Pickens in Pea Ridge. Mrs. Nesbitt said that her restaurant would be known as Trail’s End.

Pea Ridge councilman Frank Rizzio made the motion to accept Porky & Son’s bid to construct the new Emergency Services Building. Councilman Joe Hart abstained from the vote and all other members voted to accept the bid.

Can Man, Albert Kraus, and his wife, Ginny, sold their metal can collection business to Pool Sanitation owners Nancy and Jim Hollenbeck.

More trees were to be planted and Pea Ridge would have a city guide, as a result of work by Pea Ridge’s long-range planning committee.

Brett Reynolds, PRHS senior, was selected to play with the Midwest Nationals Baseball Club during its summer season.

State Representa­tive Cecile Bledsoe was the keynote speaker at the NEBCO annual dinner in Garfield.

NEBCO firefighte­r Rick Weidner presented Caroline Hewett with the Outstandin­g NEBCO Volunteer Award for her service to the NEBCO Board of Directors.

PRHS Prom 2003 Royalty were Angela Taylor, princess; David Burress, prince; Carol Ewing, queen; and Brett Reynolds, king.
