Highest Blackhawk athletic awards went to Randy Easterling, Best Football Player 1972; Curtis Snow, Best All-Around Athlete; and Jon Brown, Best Basketball Player 1972.

The grand opening of the remodeled Hall’s Town & Country Market in Garfield was held.

Wright’s Laundry on North Curtis Avenue in Pea Ridge opened.

The regular meeting of the New Meadowbroo­k Extension Homemakers Club met. The deomonstra­tion, “Dieting Facts and Fallacies,” was presented by Lucerne Markey.

Pea Ridge kindergart­en graduates included Judy Carmical, Jay Fletcher, Herbert Hebel III, John King, Paul Mariano, Darrin Ricketts, Dana Smith, Linda Strickland, Cecil Troy, Melissa Webb, Travis Woods and Belinda Yockum.

Two Pea Ridge High School juniors were selected to attend Girls State. The girls were Autumn Trickey, daughter of Jenny Trickey of Pea Ridge, and Barbara Humphrey, daughter of David and Mary Humphrey of Pea Ridge.

Ruth Talburt of Pea Ridge was named ESA’s Outstandin­g Woman of Arkansas at the 43rd state convention of the Arkansas Council of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Internatio­nal Sororities.

A University of Central Arkansas professor, Arvil Burks, spoke at Pea Ridge School on “What is Growing Health?”

A Pea Ridge National Military Park ranger was injured when lightning struck the park’s Visitor Center. The ranger was talking on the telephone when the lightning struck.

Long-time Pea Ridge volunteer fireman Bob Harmon was appointed as Pea Ridge’s first fire inspector. The appointmen­t was made by Fire Chief Jerry Collins.

Discussion of the fate of Pea Ridge’s old high school building dominated the local school board meeting.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Joshua P. O’Dell, the son of Gary and Linda O’Dell of Pea Ridge, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, PRMS Spanish teacher Mrs. Hartman had her students make piñatas and then try to break them while blindfolde­d.

Megan Blevins received the Principal’s Leadership Award at the High School Honors Assembly.

Pea Ridge High School’s Shawn Woods and Merry Miller were nominated for the coveted Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.
