The Pea Ridge Cemetery Associatio­n announced that the cemetery now has $9,500 on deposit for the Perpetual Care Fund. The Blanchard Springs Caverns were open to the public along with the Ozark Folk Center at Mountain View.

Congressma­n John Paul Hammerschm­idt’s assistant was in town so residents could make their problems known.

The Pea Ridge Riding Club was represente­d by their queen, Miss Brenda Blair, 20, at the Rodeo of the Ozarks.

Six Pea Ridge High School girls — Stacey Collins, Kari Aubrey, Cassie Webb, Brenda Webb, Melissa Webb and Lisa Webb — won honors at Basketball Camp along with the senior girls team, which included Lisa, Melissa and Brenda Webb, DeAnn Carlson and Amy Wilkerson, winning their round-robin tournament.

The U.S. Department of Agricultur­e made new penalties for those caught in food stamp frauds. Stores that were caught could not accept food stamps for six months to five years for the first violation.

The issues of thistles was brought to the attention of the Quorum Court. County Judge Al Norwood asked for an act to require landowners to prevent thistles from growing. Judge Norwood said he hadn’t heard from Gov. Bill Clinton about making this a state law.

The Benton County 4-H Horse Club winners at the Area Horse Show in Pea Ridge were Cindy Brewer, who was crowned Queen of the Northwest Area, Sydnie Smith, Tanya Sutherlan and Lori Frye.

Pea Ridge school superinten­dent Marvin Higginbott­om said the enrollment for the school year in the fall will be 850 students. They started a project to add eight rooms to elementary school and five rooms to the middle school.

The Arkansas State Police required drivers under 18 years of age to have “C” average from last grading period to take driving test.

Sgt. Mark A. Howell, Pea Ridge graduate of 1981, was decorated with the Army Achievemen­t Medal, which is awarded to soldiers for meritoriou­s service, acts of courage, or other outstand- ing achievemen­ts.

Churches began to become Red Cross Disaster Shelter sites.

Artist John Garcia was selected to judge the Pea Ridge Fair Art Show. The Battlefiel­d 4-H Club raised $225 at Bike-a-thon for leukemia.

The Pea Ridge City Council unanimousl­y voted to seek appraisal of the old high school building in order to buy it and surroundin­g land.

Lester Hall announced that the Sonic fast food franchise bought land in Pea Ridge.

Historic Garfield El- ementary school received a new roof after 58 years.

Louisa Duncan retired after 32 years in the education profession and 27 within the Pea Ridge School District.

A storm on May 16 did not cause enough damage to receive aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA. Brett Reynolds, pitcher for the Pea Ridge Blackhawks baseball team, played in the inaugural High School All Star Game. Bonnie Fullmer, was hired as new principal at Pea Ridge Middle School. The Arkansas Committed to Education Foundation awarded more than 7,200 Wendy’s Jr. Frosty certificat­es to students participat­ing in the computer incentive program.
