Teaching children; helping moms

“It gives them a break, time to recharge,” Burgundy Williams says of the Mothers’ Day Out program at First Baptist Church, Pea Ridge.

The program, begun about three years ago, is designed to both provide time off for mothers and a teaching time for the children from six weeks to prekindergarten.

Williams, who taught in the program before becoming director, said all teachers are certified child care instructors and have passed a background check.

“We do circle time during

which Bible stories are taught and children pray and offer prayer requests,” William says, adding that there are educational worksheets with lessons to prepare the children for kindergarten, including working on numbers and letters. Art and craft time are offered as is a time for physical education.

“I believe in this program. It’s wonderful for me as a mom and to be able to work here,” Williams said. “My teachers are great! We’re just like family and get along really great. We love each other.”

“Children are social and they learn so much from other children. This gives them spiritual learning and fun. “

Grinning, Williams says she never imagined she would be a stay-at-home mom, much less a teacher. “I never thought I could be a mom. It’s a big responsibility to be sure they’re taken care of and loved. This is fun!”

There is an open house scheduled for 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, for parents to see what they’re children have learned this semester. Then, MDO will take a break and reconvene Jan. 7.
