Pea Ridge Times

Library one-year anniversary today

- PEGGY MADDOX

I left the library on Thursday evening hoping to make it home before the rain and hail arrived but it descended before I was out of the parking lot. That certainly made for an interesting drive home.

The display shelves were decorated last week by members of the Pea Ridge Historical Society. The unit depicting flower and vegetable sure makes me wish for fresh locally grown produce. The other unit features baseball and Pea Ridge’s own Pea Ridge Day! Thank you to Margaret Cheek, Billie Hickman and Aurora Turner for creating such an interesting and eye catching display.

After cancelling two appointments with my eye doctor due to snow and ice, I was finally able to get some laser surgery done on my right eye. There was a lot of scar tissue from a cataract surgery some time ago. My vision is much improved and it was totally painless.

Everyone must be spring cleaning and/ or getting ready for the city wide clean-up — the library is receiving lots of books and magazines. I have been reading on Facebook about a citywide garage sale the first weekend in May. If the weather cooperates, we might possibly be able to have a book sale then. I will keep you posted.

The library opened in the North Curtis Avenue location one year ago, on April 9, 2013. We are celebrating that exciting time in our history with cookies and lemonade at the library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 9. Please join us as we reminisce and look forward to continued growth.

I came across a quote from Mark Twain this week that really stuck with me: “A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read.” We are very fortunate to live in a country where we have the freedom not only to read but read what we choose. Sadly, many do not choose to read at all and sadder still, many in this area are unable to read. The Literacy Council of Benton County works hard to help people read and the library is looking forward to partnering with them soon by providing a location for tutoring.

New books for adults, teens and children are arriving weekly. We continue to remove books from the shelves that have not been read in four or more years. These are for sale in the library along with duplicate books that have been donated. There are some cook books and a good number of children’s books available as well. See you at the library!
