40 Years Ago Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1975 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Area game warden George Clark of Rogers announced this week that a total of 257 deer were harvested in Benton County last week with the first deer season of the fall. This compares with 176 total deer taken last year.

Two local youths, Gary Henson and Leeroy Creekmore have each taken their first deer. They were hunting together out northeast of Pea Ridge and both shot the same buck. Ray Arnold of Pea Ridge, bagged a deer on the final day of deer season Saturday in the Beaver Lake area with a 30-30.

The senior Blackhawk basketball boys traveled to West Fork the night of Nov. 13 for their first game. The starting lineup for the ’Hawks was: Myrle Morgan (24), Steve Keller (44), Randy Prophet (32), Tony Dye (10), and Chris Keys (14). Steve Keller led scoring with 8 points and 7 rebounds, while Myrle Morgan was close behind with 7 points and 8 rebounds. The final score was 50-17 in favor of West Fork.

Pea Ridge City Council members appointed an interim city marshal, Roger Harris, to serve until a permanent city marshal can be named, set a special meeting to consider applicatio­ns for city marshal, accepted council member David Hatfield’s resignatio­n, approved the purchase of a pickup for the city and considered other action Thursday night.

Pea Ridge basketball­ers were off to a flying start this week with five regular games and four Jamboree games played. The athletes chalked up five victories and began a hopeful season.

A Pea Ridge area woman said that she plans to file suit in Chancery Court to force the Benton County Road Department to maintain a road near her home.

Darla Nix, who lives on Gann Ridge Road, said that Wendell Jones Road has not been graded by the county in two to three years and is in poor condition.

The Pea Ridge United fund mailed letters of solicitati­on to approximat­ely 65 area businesses last week, said United Fund Chairman Jason Tennant.

Tennant said he hopes that the letters result in some $10,000 in contributi­ons. This year’s overall goal, he said, is to exceed the $30,000 that was contribute­d last year.

Nov. 7 was the first Tuesday of the month, birthday and bingo for the 55 and Over Club of Pea Ridge. The blackout prize was brought by Pearl Patterson and won by Irma Harris.

Beta Alpha Sorority served 120 and took out more than 40 turkey dinners at the annual Seniors Thanksgivi­ng Dinner last Saturday.

The ladies of Beta Alpha sorority served an early Thanksgivi­ng dinner to the senior citizens of Pea Ridge on Saturday, Nov. 19. At least 80 folks signed up and carryout dinners were made up to go to those at home.

Senior Airman Jennifer Jackson, daughter of Damon and Kelly Jackson of Pea Ridge, stationed in Kirkuk, Iraq, received a service award. Jennifer celebrated her 23rd birthday Oct. 27 in Iraq. This is her second tour of duty in Iraq.

The Pea Ridge Blackhawks bolted to a 21-4 lead and cruised past the Lincoln Wolves 47-26 in their season opener Friday Night.
