- AMANDA CHILDS Pea Ridge Public Schools Social worker

October can start to bring the autumn weather, a cold breeze, fall colors and football. Yet, with the colder weather can also bring the “seasonal blues.” Seasonal depression is considered somewhat common and can affect many people.

Symptoms of seasonal depression can include an increase in moodiness, fatigue, losing interest in things that once were enjoyable to you, experiencing changes in appetite and difficulty with sleeping. While these are only a few symptoms, individuals can experience these symptoms for a few months, and will occur around the same time every year and end in a similar pattern. It is important to keep in good communication with a physician if you feel you are experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety. (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5))

For some people, the holidays can bring excitement and to others, it can increase anxiety and stress levels. For those who experience stress, anxiety, depression or struggle with managing their mood during the holiday season, it is important to find helpful strategies to manage one’s emotional needs.

Finding ways to cope with stress and anxiety can include finding small things throughout your day such as eating healthy food, drinking plenty of water, developing a healthy sleep routine, and being out in the sunlight when possible. Being around friends and family can also help provide needed support to get through the holi- days. While some people find being around family stressful for the holidays, it is important to not isolate yourself from others who can provide you support and happiness.

Seasonal depression can affect several people, ranging in age and race. It is important to always consult your doctor about any significant changes in your mood, sleep patterns, eating habits, etc. It is always important to try and take good care of your mind, body and soul.
