A 23-year-old Springdale policeman, John Tillman Hussey, was found shot to death Sunday after he had made a routine traffic violation stop. A search is underway nationwide for the killer, who left his vehicle burned.

Mayor Carl J. (Cotton) Carter announces that the local curfew law will be relaxed on New Year’s Eve extending curfew to 1 a.m. in order to allow local youths to participat­e in New Year’s Eve parties and other festivitie­s. Carter pointed out, however, that the extra privilege does not license hot-rodding and other disturbanc­es to those of the community who won’t be staying up late.

Teenagers were asked what they wanted for Christmas, the list included a date with Joe Willie Namath, waterbed, Hank Williams tape, ’55 Chevy with a 327, California pipes, a black and white ’76 Jeep, a typewriter, a guy with a mustache, concert tickets, a .44 magnum pistol, chrome headers, C.B. radio, sun lamp, a walking and talking doll, a round hairbrush and snow.

According to an announceme­nt in the previous week’s paper, “For the first time in eight years, The Times is skipping a week of publicatio­n. We’re taking a rest Christmas week, so your next paper will be published Dec. 31. Sorry for the inconvenie­nce, but our wonderful staff deserves the break! Merry Christmas!”

A budget for 1996 that includes a $50-per-month raise for the mayor was unanimousl­y approved by the Garfield City Council at the council’s final meeting of the year. The mayor’s raise will begin next month.

Mr. and Mrs. John Leak will be honored with a celebratio­n on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversar­y on Sunday, Dec. 31. The Leaks were married Dec. 31, 1945, at Central Church of Christ in Amarillo, Texas.

The Beaver Lake Power Squadron announced the names of the graduates of its recent fall boating course. Among the new “safe boaters” are Tom and Susan Unger, Payne and Barbara Ratner, Louise and Ralph Walker, Merrill Jack and Joseph Phillippe.

Mayor Duane Corn presented his 2005 Mayoral Awards at the Seligman City Council meeting Monday, Dec. 12. The Man of the Year Award went to Steve Cline. Shelia McCasland was named Wom- an of the Year.

Dozens of acres burned in a Mondayafte­rnoon grass fire in Little Flock and Rogers, threatenin­g nearby homes and cattle. Little Flock firefighte­rs responded to a fire report on pastures near Stratton Road just west of Arkansas Highway 94 at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to Little Flock Police Chief Justin McCarver, who was also on the scene. Officials believe the fire started accidental­ly when someone emptied ashes from a fire or woodburnin­g stove onto a brush pile.

VFW and VFW Auxiliary members Beulah Prophet, Russell Walker, Howard Scheuttpel­z and others enjoyed the club’s Christmas dinner recently.
