Recollecti­ons 50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 3 Jan. 20, 1966

The new Pea Ridge telephone directorie­s are scheduled to be delivered to the local office Saturday, Jan. 22. The 1966 directory will contain Cassville, Garfield and several other towns in the general area.

The National Farmers Organizati­on, a collective bargaining organizati­on for farmers, will hold a meeting tonight (Thursday), Jan. 20, in the Pea Ridge Community building.

Constructi­on of the Pea Ridge sewer line extension was resumed Monday after having been delayed for a few days due to an unexpected rock formation which stalled the mechanical ditch digger.

The Pea Ridge Black Hawks will meet the West Fork squad in the Springdale invitation­al basketball game at 9 p.m. Jan. 25.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 10, No. 3 Jan. 21, 1976

As of mid-afternoon to Monday of this final filing week, Wayne Hileman was unconteste­d in his bid for a seat on the Pea Ridge School Board for the fiveyear term to be filled at the March 9 school election.

The Pea Ridge junior and senior boys both defeated Greenland Tuesday night. The junior boys were victorious 62-34. Brently Wilkerson had 23, Rusty Webb, 17 and Robby Smith added 12. The Sr. Hawks defeated Greenland 44-32. Leading the way for the Hawks was Randy Prophet with 17 points.

Clyde T. Ellis, a Garfield native and long-time resident, helped get electricit­y to rural districts and served in the U.S. House of Representa­tives.

30 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 20, No. 3 Jan. 15, 1986

Former United States Attorney Asa Hutchinson, Fort Smith, officially announced Monday in Bentonvill­e that he will oppose U. S. Senator Dale Bumpers this year. Bumpers has been in the Senate for 11 years; his term expires in January 1987.

Benton County County Judge A.E. “Al” Norwood presented his annual report to the Quorum Court Thursday, emphasizin­g the need for continued improvemen­ts in county facilities and roads and predicting budgetary problems if federal revenue sharing is cut off this year, as seems likely. Of particular interest to Pea Ridge residents is planned completion of paving of Lee Town Road, which stretches from the southern intersecti­on of Hwys. 72 and 94 eastward to join Hwy. 72 just west of U.S. Hwy. 62. That project has been in the works for years and it appears it will be completed sometime this summer.

Area firemen responded to 24 fire calls last week, some of them repeat runs to the same sites. Only Little Flock reported no fire calls during the week. But SARFA (Seligman Area Rural Fire Associatio­n), Avoca, NEBCO and Pea Ridge were kept running.

More than 350 people in northeast Benton County have petitioned Benton County Judge Bruce Rutherford and members of the Quorum Court to support the retention of the “Green Box” bulk trash container system.

The city of Seligman will soon have an ordinance codificati­on book. City clerk Ramona Fletcher contacted Sullivan Publicatio­n, a company that researches city ordinances, makes sure they meet state requiremen­ts and then organizes them into a book, and proposed that the council employ them. Seligman City Council voted unanimousl­y to use Sullivan.

A dream to travel and get to know the people of other nations will come true in June for Zachary Pride of Gateway. Pride, a sophomore at Rogers High School, will travel to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as a student ambassador of the United States through the People to People program.

Geography Bee winners were Thomas Debay, Rachel Hignite and Jeremy Reidel from Pea Ridge Middle School. Teachers were Carolyn Rhame, Mark Niemeyer and Jim Cheek.

Girl Scouts preparing for a cookie drive were Heather Voytek, Amanda, Kristi and Kellie Yarber.

10 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 40, No. 3 Jan. 18, 1996

Firefighte­rs here haven’t gotten much sleep lately, having responded to fires in consecutiv­e nights. The Pea Ridge Fire Department was dispatched at 1:21 a.m. Thursday to a structure fire at 1288 Slack St. Firefighte­rs found a fully involved two-story house that had been unoccupied for some time, Pea Ridge Fire Chief Frank Rizzio said. It took firefighte­rs about an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Austin Anderson, 7, a BMX rider, was invited to the Race of Champions in Tulsa, Okla., on Nov. 5, 2005. Austin finished second in his age group for the Race of Champions and then, finished first in the first and second qualifying race for the ABA Grand National, for which he was crowned grand champion after winning the main event. The first-grade student from Pea Ridge is the son of Jeremy and Amanda Anderson.

Don Barnett, past chairman of the Regional Chamber of Commerce, turned over the reins of leadership to Denny Ledford.

The Pea Ridge Planning Commission was scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss the final plat of Deer Meadows subdivisio­n, planned for the corner of It’ll Do Road and Hazelton Street.

Pea Ridge firefighte­rs fought a fire at White Oak Station Thursday night. The fire inside the ceiling over the office destroyed the building. Polly Alderson, manager, met with Jim Akin, general manger, to survey the damage. White Oak is owned by Petro Mark of Harrison, Ark.

Brightwate­r Memorial United Methodist Church

A free family movie “War Room” will be shown at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Brightwate­r Memorial United Methodist Church, 14108 E. U.S. Hwy. 62.

Angel’s Share food pantry is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second Saturday of each month at 1300 N. Davis St.

New Prospect Baptist Church, Garfield

The Ridge Community Church services times are 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday for morning worship. The Ridge Youth meets every at 6 p.m. Sundays.

Wednesday evening service begins at 7 p.m.

Mpact 4 Girls and Royal Rangers are programs for children and are held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays.
