50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 8 Feb. 24, 1966

The Pea Ridge National Military Park received a military saddle from Mr. Audie Buttry. This saddle has a particular­ly interestin­g history. On the night of March 6, 1862, General Sterling Price was directing his Missouri State Guard into position for the battle that would start the next day. As the soldiers trudged along their way Gen. Price stopped for a few hours rest at the home of John Buttry. The next morning, Buttry, acting as a guide, accompanie­d the general and his staff on their way to battle. Price had provided Buttry with a horse and saddle and when Union artillery began to send shells into the area of Price’s staff, the general advised Buttry to return to his home.

Pea Ridge firefighte­rs fought a grass fire Saturday afternoon at the Gene Miser farm south of town, according to Fire Chief Rodger Hickman. This was the first fire alarm since the city assumed responsibi­lity of operating the Fire Department and the fire truck arrived on the scene only minutes after the alarm had been sounded.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 10 No. 8 Feb. 25, 1976

The Graphic-Scene, which has been covering Pea Ridge Country for more than 10 years, the last nine under the direction of Earle and Billie Jines. Effective to- day, the new owners of the Graphic-Scene are Howell and Donna Spencer Medders.

Pea Ridge will have its own pharmacy beginning next Wednesday, March 3, when the new structure housing Harps Pharmacy opens its doors for business. The new business is owned by brothers Ralph and Bob Harp, both pharmacist­s.

30 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 20 No. 8 Feb. 19, 1986

Pea Ridge City Council hired a fire department and ambulance service employee, added a second deputy marshal position and filled Park Commission vacancies. Mayor Lester Hall swore in Bill Almond to the Park Commission.

On Feb. 14, Pea Ridge Fire Department volunteers Jerry Collins and Mark O’Connell responded to a recliner fire at the Fred Calvin home. The fire started when a cigarette lighter dropped as it was being filled. Damage was limited to the chair.

20 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 30 No. 8 Feb. 22, 1996

An arsonist who has targeted the Pea Ridge National Military Park set seven fires on the reservatio­n in one day, said park ranger John Knox. He said most of the fires were extinguish­ed quickly.

A group of students from Pea Ridge High School helped build, paint and clean up the newest Rogers Habitat for Humanity house.

10 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 40 No. 8 Feb. 22, 2006

Andrew Knepp, 11, Dean Weaver, 1, and Taren Peterson, 10, declared war with snow balls and took turns hiding behind the snow fort they built in a snow-covered field along South Curtis Avenue.

The Pea Ridge Police Department has nearly quadrupled in size in the past decade. Officers include Police Chief Tim Ledbetter, Sgt. Cerilla Doyle, Lon Brown, Darin Wright, Chris Olson, Tim Shaw and Karl Schmidt III.
