Computer, and knowledge, replaced by new ones

-

Computers are at times such great help, very useful, and fun to use. At other times they are a grief and a headache! I have just gone through a computer crash which was brought on by mechanical failure within one of my two hard drives. My computer by some measures was getting old. I had bought it originally in 2002, when we first moved back to Pea Ridge. That was when we had the computer shop in the Battlefield Mall on the southeast corner of South Curtis and Lee Town. I had wanted to have a computer that I could assemble myself, and one that could be updated over many years, rather than being replaced every few years. Since 2002, I had had troubles from time to time with almost every component, including the main board (mother board), the CD Drive, the floppy drive, and three different hard drives. So, although the case was from 2002, everything inside had been replaced at least once. I didn’t think of it as 14 years old, which would really be ancient for a computer; I thought of it as maybe four or five years old. My computer repairman looked at it, and remarked, “Looks like it’s getting pretty old, brother!”

Since I had gone through computer crashes before, I was supposed to have learned my lesson about maintaining backups of all my important files. Actually I had maintained many backups, and when the storage disk started giving problems, I was able to rescue quite a number of files in good shape. But, there were three or four rather important files that could not be retrieved, either being unavailable, or having been corrupted during the system’s efforts to salvage the main hard disk. My problem first showed up as a little message on startup,
